Pediatric Dentistry: A Clinical Approach, 2nd Edition
Pediatric Dentistry: A Clinical Approach, 2nd Edition
Goran Koch (Editor), Sven Poulsen (Editor)

Description
The second edition of Pediatric Dentistry: A Clinical Approach offers a fully revised and updated review of pediatric dentistry. This important text covers the full spectrum of the subject, basing itself in the clinical practice of the dental treatment of children and adolescents and providing a special emphasis on evidence-based oral health care for young people. Pediatric Dentistry provides comprehensive coverage of all aspects of treatment for children, ranging from health promotion and prevention to strategies for systematic and comprehensive oral care.
Pediatric Dentistry: A Clinical Approach follows a logical approach, covering major dental and oral diseases and their diagnosis and management in children and adolescents, including caries, periodontal and endodontic conditions, and TMJ disorders. The book also discusses a number of dental and oral conditions that relate more directly to childhood, such as dental erosion, traumatic injuries to the teeth, pain control, and treatment of physically and mentally disabled children. Topics such as dental, physical, intellectual and emotional development are also thoroughly reviewed.
Pediatric Dentistry will provide students of dentistry, as well as pediatric dentists and dentists involved in the treatment of young patients, with a uniquely clear, comprehensive, and clinical approach to the dental treatment of children and adolescents.

This book is edited by two internationally renowned experts in paediatric dentistry with contributions from many clinicians and scientists. The book aims to serve as a basis for undergraduate learning and to aid qualified dentists taking further study in paediatric dentistry or providing care to child patients.

The overall layout and organisation of the chapters is intuitive, with an interesting and relevant introductory chapter outlining the history and development of paediatric dentistry. This is followed by chapters focussing on child development and behaviour management. Next the editors outline the epidemiology of dental caries in children before covering clinical and radiographic examination and caries prevention, diagnosis and management. Erosion, endodontics and periodontal diseases in children are then explored before the editors present chapters on tooth and occlusal development, orthodontics and disturbances of normal development. The last chapters of the book describe trauma, oral lesions, oral surgery, TMJ disorders and care for paediatric patients with special needs.

Individual chapters are laid out clearly with a concise introduction before relevant sub-topics are explored in a logical order. The information is presented very clearly throughout with a number of useful large colour photos and diagrams. Boxes containing clear lists of information are regularly displayed. Each chapter ends with an extensive list of references maintaining the editors' evidence-based approach and providing the reader with relevant opportunities to seek further information.

English is not the editors' first language and this is apparent as many sentences could be worded more clearly and concisely. In addition, the terms and clinical guidelines are not the same as those in the UK.

The index is very comprehensive, however, the book could benefit from a glossary of terms for quick reference. A useful appendix could be added that provides checklists for dental practitioners, as well as examples of information that should be provided to patients by clinicians.

The editors fulfil their aim of providing a basis of clinical paediatric dentistry, however, if comprehensive detail is required on a topic, further reading would be required. This book will be useful to undergraduate students looking for a concise and clear introduction to various aspects of paediatric dentistry and to qualified dentists wishing to refresh their memory on clinical procedures and information.
