A novel is a relatively long work of narrative fiction, normally written in prose form, and which is typically published as a book. The present English word for a long work of prose fiction derives from the Italian novella for "new", "news", or "short story of something new", itself from the Latin novella, a singular noun use of the neuter plural of novellus, diminutive of novus, meaning "new". Walter Scott made a distinction between the novel, in which (as he saw it) "events are accommodated to the ordinary train of human events and the modern state of society" and the romance, which he defined as "a fictitious narrative in prose or verse; the interest of which turns upon marvellous and uncommon incidents". However, many such romances, including the historical romances of Scott, Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, are also frequently called novels, and Scott describes romance as a "kindred term". This sort of romance is in turn different from the genre fiction love romance or romance novel
A short story is a piece of prose fiction that typically can be read in one sitting and focuses on a self-contained incident or series of linked incidents, with the intent of evoking a "single effect" or mood.
A dictionary definition is "an invented prose narrative shorter than a novel usually dealing with a few characters and aiming at unity of effect and often concentrating on the creation of mood rather than plot."
The short story is a crafted form in its own right. Short stories make use of plot, resonance, and other dynamic components as in a novel, but typically to a lesser degree. While the short story is largely distinct from the novel or novella (a shorter novel), authors generally draw from a common pool of literary techniques.
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
Introduction
by Julia Eccleshare
Puffin Modern Classics series editor
Resourceful mothers are familiar in children’s fiction, but few have to fight against such odds as Mrs
Frisby, who will do anything to save the life of her dangerously ill son Timothy. Reading about all she
does, it is easy to forget that she is just a field mouse or, more significantly, that she is helped by …
rats!
And that’s the point. Within this clever, witty and heartwarming story, the author subverts
everything you have ever thought about rats. From being troublesome vermin they are elevated to
kind, caring and, above all, highly intelligent and well-organized creatures who think and plan their
way out of difficulties. For readers, they are a classic group of vulnerable underdogs who become
strong and outwit their oppressors, not through the acquisition of familiar comic-book super powers
but by the simpler yet equally effective power of learning to read. It’s a message with strong
resonance for all readers who are themselves, in a way, also growing more powerful because of what
they are learning even as they read the story.
When Mrs Frisby is directed by a crow to ask the rats for the help she needs to save her son’s life,
she little imagines what she’ll find. Apart from their whereabouts in the farmyard, she knows nothing
of them, not even that they knew her husband and that he was privy to their secret. Soon she too learns
just how these rats are different and how they came about that difference.
The story that Nicodemus, the rat leader, eloquently and elegantly narrates is both entertaining and
shocking. It raises serious questions about how humans treat animals and will lead many readers to
question the propriety of intervening in nature at all, and of experimenting on animals in particular.
With its strong farmyard setting and its clearly described view of how the natural world survives
through the delicately poised interactions between the different creatures in it and their mutual
support, this is a tremendous adventure in which all is almost lost many times. It is also a reminder of
the importance and power of intelligence in creating a better world and, above all, a celebration of the
empowerment and liberation of … reading!
